The Lake Bennett Series

A series of paintings and poetry inspired by Lake Bennett, Northern Territory and its wildlife.

The Kookaburra

A dead straight dive into the water

Delivers a catch for the slaughter

Like a missile they launch

Fast and Staunch

A torpedo, a little jet fighter

They sit together as a family

Sing and chatter as they fill a tree

Spread joy and cheer with their symphony

They are a feathered dichotomy

Beautiful and beastly

The Northern Rosella

Colours of royalty, purple and gold

Regally perched, striking and bold

Quietly curious watching me pass

Waiting to return to his grass

He sits and waits so patiently

With a princely air of sovereignty

He crowns the north so beautifully

So humbly and uniquely

The Rainbow Bee Eater

IMG_6888 2.HEIC

Swooping, rolling, twisting and turning

All to the sound of sweet little chirping

Yellow, orange, red and green

Flipping about through the slipstream

Above the treetop in the fading light

An invisible breath blows them out in flight

Out from the limbs of where they rest

Together at once, all abreast

Halos of swirling flight

An absolutely breathtaking sight

The Burdekin Duck

Unsure and limping, she hobbled on the deck

Then settled in the sun from the hard trek

A safe space to heal, moments to steal

She tucked herself up and rested just enough

She took what she needed this duck

A lakeside sanctuary rich and sweet

She was safe to rest for a beat

De Lago (The Lake)

IMG_6899 2.HEIC

Tranquility drifts upon the air

As the balmy breeze shifts my hair

The sun reclines behind the western hill

A symphony of nature echoes through the still

Starlight dances in the water's reflection

A halcyon cloak envelopes perfection

A place of deep calm where I can just be

De Lago is home for me

The little Kingfisher

Shy she may be
And quick in flight
Rare to see
But such a delight
Feathered little blur of blue
Hiding and avoiding you
But should you inspire
To catch a sight
Bird on a wire
In the morning light

The Dollar Bird

In sparkling, pearled, blue, teal and greens
A beautiful, graceful sight to see
Rolling and riding across grass and reeds
They come to borrow the lake to breed
Laying white eggs in the hollow of trees
Displaying blue feathers that make you believe
They are saving dollars for when they leave
Across the sea, returning home to New Guinea

The Dead Forest

IMG_6900 2.HEIC

The moon shines through the trees now hollow
Mystical light beckons you to follow
Into the forest of dead trees past
Where a spell of serenity is cast
Enticing you in as the sun sets
Caught in a hypnotic twilight net
A land of feathers, flight and light
As the sun gently surrenders to night

IMG_6889 2.HEIC

The Sea Eagle

Majestic in flight, a great bird bellied white
Soaring at heights, a worship filled sight
Banking on winds whipping at strong wings
Screeching, squawking, in warning it sings
River and lake to nautical land
Its power is riveting, righteously grand
A mighty master of air in command
He is glory in his proudly stand

The Love Addicts Songbook

A series of paintings and poetry about the highs and lows of love.

Song 2: Lovesick Addict

You were that hot air rising
That stick shift drifting
You were that swell high riding
That fall, you were that fall
You were that can't fall asleep
No, I can't even eat
You were that can't get enough
That tough, honey I like it rough
You were that slick move lightning
That white light brightening
You were that drug
That drug, honey you were that drug
I was a one-way ticket
Banking on your need to hit it I wanted more, you opened that door
Now I'm a lovesick addict
A lovesick addict
You were that full moon rising
That galaxy diving
You were my sunset horizon
That trip, honey you were that trip You were that cool water flowing
That deep internal knowing
You were that need
That greed, that soft whispered plead
I was a one way ticket
Banking on your need to hit it I wanted more, you opened that door
Now I'm a lovesick addict
A lovesick addict
I was a free ride
Come in with the high tide
Abandoned by the roadside
I was that girl, you were my world
You were that one that leaves scars
Shattered my heart
You were that one
That one, that tore me apart
You were a no return ticket
And you never really hid it I wanted more, you locked the door
Now I'm a lovesick addict
A lovesick addict

Song 7: Silent Tombs

The hurtful truth fell from your lips
Split right through my misplaced worship
Like a cold winter shower
Softly it fell with a mighty power
You sucked the energy from the room
The silence ringing in this tomb
The echoes shift along the walls
Mocking me as I fall
I drop my head into the wind
Deafened by the whistling
Listening to a thousand thoughts
Knowing one thing is blindingly clear
I'm a fucking mess in here
Misplaced faith and youthful hope
A slippery dark degenerate slope
Silence was your cover as a guilty lover
Cold hearted cheating meet love addict bleeding
You sucked the energy from the room
The silence ringing in this tomb
The echoes shift along the walls
Mocking me as I fall
I Buried the jagged remains of my heart
Laid it to rest with solitude in the dark
Entombed in silent limited worth
Waiting for the day of rebirth

I sat on the side stairs

Wiping the sleep from my eyes

Waiting for you in the dark there

Hoping to not get caught in my lies

Couldn’t they see

You and I were a fight that had to be

Driving too fast, riding too fast

Escaping all your scars

Getting distance from your past

This life requires too many masks

We were never going to last

We were desperate in every touch

A volatile clash

You were my everything too much

Survived the fall only to crash

Possession and jealousy

Now the fight was to leave

Driving too fast, riding too fast

Escaping all your scars

Getting distance from your past

This life requires too many masks

We were never going to last

Loving to fight

Fighting to love

Promises and lies

And my heart dies

Driving too fast, riding too fast

Creating new scars

Making sure you don’t get far

Your masks can’t hide who you really are

But you won’t be the last heart

To devastate this love outcast

As your poison was the toxic seed

That ate away all my security

Left me crippled with twisted dreams

Maybe someday I could be worthy

And someone would stitch my seams

Write happily ever after into my scenes

Song 13: Tattooed Sleeve

I took the path to your front door
And left the gate wide open
I was sure you were after more and
This was how to make it happen
I told you I would stop at nothing
To show you all that we could be
I shared with you a dream of being something
My heart on my tattooed sleeve
Now you can say I'm being naive
I let passion master reason
But the way that man looked at me
Made summer my every season
I took the path to your front door
I left the gate wide open
I was sure you were after more and
This was how to make it happen
I waited patiently for you to see
I waited patiently for you to kiss me
No more words were necessary
You needed to believe
My heart on my tattooed sleeve
You matched me breath for breath
Hunger in your eyes
Not a space between us was left
As you brought me to realise
I took the path to your front door
I left the gate wide open
I was sure you were after more and
This was how to make it happen
With love all over the front step
No regrets and my heart leapt
Just the urgent need To jump in deep with
My heart on my tattooed sleeve

Song 10: Teach Me

Will you fight for me
Save me from the raging sea
Pull me form the wreckage
That threatens to devour me

Will you run the gauntlet
Navigate the maze for me
Exorcise the haunting
Memories that stay with me

Will you risk the treason
Friendships and family
Could you find a reason
To make me all you’ll ever need

Could you dare the danger
To catch me when I fall
Make me be a stranger
To who I was before

Could you be my shining knight
Upon his fiery stead
Brave enough to unleash the light
I am unable to free

Could you bear the responsibility
I place upon your shoulders
For I have lost the capability
To shed these emotional boulders

Will you teach me all you know
Of love and the ability to grow
Of your compassion and forgiveness
So, I may end this sorrow
